Mit The Slowest Urgency sucht Philipp Gehmachers Bewegungsvokabular, seit 20 Jahren einzigartig im internationalen Choreografie-Kontext, nach einer Dringlichkeit, die sich in Körpern niederschlägt: um die Dinge zu bewegen, die uns bewegen. Es sind Körper im Werden, in immer anderen Rekonfigurationen, von einer Dringlichkeit getrieben, die augenblicklich innere und äußere Landschaft verschränkt und zugleich den Moment, in dem die Welle bricht, langsam dehnt. So oszilliert diese Choreografie paradox gegenläufig zwischen langsam und dringlich, auch zwischen engster Gruppe und ausgestreuten Singularitäten. Sie entsteht in Rückbezüglichkeit mit dem „environment“: 2021 bei den Wiener Festwochen mit dem Jugendstiltheater auf der Baumgartner Höhe und bei der Sommerszene Salzburg mit der Galerie 5020, weiters 2022 bei ImPulsTanz mit dem mumok und 2023 bei der CPA mit dem Großen Saal in den Seestadt Studios: als würden die Aufführungsorte und die Körper-Landscapes der Performer*innen einander hervorbringen und als würde der ortsspezifischen Black Box mit dem White Cube neues Leben eingehaucht.

Philipp Gehmacher studierte zeitgenössischen Tanz und Choreografie in London in den 1990er- und bildende Kunst in Wien in den 2010er-Jahren. Seit Oktober 2022 ist er Professor für Zeitgenössischen Tanz und Choreografie sowie Studiengangsleiter des BA Tanz Kontext Choreografie am HZT Berlin. Gehmachers künstlerische Arbeiten verwenden Körper und Sprache als Formen der Äußerung, den gebauten und institutionellen Raum, Dinge, Objekte und Skulptur. Sein Fokus liegt auf Körperlichkeit, Bewegung und der Realisierung von Körpern-in-Bewegung als geteilte Umgebungen, in Interaktion und potenziellem Zusammensein. Mit diesen Arbeiten zwischen Black Box, White Cube und darüber hinaus ist Philipp Gehmacher lokal und international auf Theaterfestivals und in Ausstellungsinstitutionen vertreten. Er arbeitete in unterschiedlichen Konstellationen und Medien u. a. mit Laurent Chétouane, Ian Kaler, Krassimira Kruschkova, Vladimir Miller, Jen Rosenblit und Meg Stuart zusammen.

Philipp Gehmacher has been developing his unique movement vocabulary for 20 years. In The Slowest Urgency, he is looking for an urgency that manifests in bodies: to move the things that move us. Bodies in the process of becoming, in ever different reconfigurations, are driven by an urgency that instantly interlaces the inner and outer landscapes and, at the same time, stretches the moment the wave breaks by slowing it down as much as possible. The choreography thus paradoxically oscillates in opposite directions – between utmost slowness and utmost urgency, as well as between close groups and scattered singularities. It unfolds while taking its respective ‘environment’ into account, i. e. the Jugendstiltheater on Baumgartner Höhe at the Wiener Festwochen and Galerie 5020 at Sommerszene Salzburg in 2021, mumok at ImPulsTanz in 2022 and the Großer Saal in Seestadt Studios at the CPA in 2023: it’s as if the performance venues and the body landscapes of the performers are generating each other, breathing new life into the location-specific black box with a white cube.

Philipp Gehmacher studied Contemporary Dance and Choreography in London in the 1990s and Fine Arts in Vienna in the 2010s. He is a Professor of Contemporary Dance and Choreography and has directed the BA Dance Context Choreography at HZT Berlin since October 2022. Gehmacher’s artistic works use the body and verbal language as forms of utterance, built and institutional space, as well as sculpture, objects, and things. He focuses on physicality, movement, and the realisation of bodies-in-motion as shared environments, in interaction and towards potential togetherness. With these works between and beyond black box and white cube, Philipp Gehmacher is represented locally and internationally in theatre festivals and exhibition contexts.
