Ob im Geiste der Revolution oder in romantischen Träumereien, Skandale provozieren die Vorstellung des Unmöglichen. Utopisch oder profan, wie kann ein Skandal offenbaren, was unbewusst in unserer Fantasie liegt, und wie zeigt er auf, wo die Gesellschaft ihre Grenzen festlegt? Wenn das Leben ein Skandal ist, der darauf wartet, zu geschehen, wie positionieren wir uns dann in seiner Matrix? Unmoralisch und ohne Anstand sind Skandale Vorfälle, bei denen Fantasie und Vergnügen im Mittelpunkt stehen. Geleitet von den Fragen, für wen dieses Vergnügen bestimmt ist und um welchen Preis, erkundet Ligia Lewis’ neuer „Plot“ die Bühne, auf der sich Skandale abspielen. Indem sie historische, anekdotische, politische und mythische Erzählungen miteinander verwebt, konstruiert Lewis eine Poetik der Verweigerung an den Grenzen der Repräsentation. Ein Tanz zwischen Affekt und Verkörperung, Sehen und Gesehenwerden, ist A Plot / A Scandal eine im Entstehen begriffene Szene, in der die Erregung über das, was nicht passt, ihren Platz finden könnte.

Ligia Lewis arbeitet als Choreografin und Tänzerin. In ihren Arbeiten, die oft von körperlicher Intensität und Humor geprägt sind, treffen klangliche und visuelle Metaphern auf den Körper und materialisieren das Rätselhafte, das Poetische und das Dissonante. Lewis’ Choreografien arbeiten immer wieder die unterschiedlichsten Nuancen von Verkörperung heraus. Dabei werden normative Vorstellungen vom Körper gestört und gleichzeitig die geisterhaften Spuren von Geschichte, Erinnerung und Unbekanntem verhandelt. Ihre Arbeit wurde an verschiedenen Orten in Europa und den USA präsentiert. Sie wurde mit dem Tabori Award in der Kategorie „Distinction“, einem Foundation for Contemporary Arts Grants Award und einem Bessie Award for Outstanding Production ausgezeichnet. Lewis hat kürzlich folgende Werke fertiggestellt: A Plot / A Scandal (2022), Still Not Still (2021), deader than dead (Film und Live-Performance, 2020), die Trilogie Water Will (in Melody) (2018), minor matter (2016) und Sorrow Swag (2014). Im TQW waren zuletzt ihre Arbeiten Still not Still und Sensation 1 zu sehen.

A plot exposed, a foul deed enacted, invites scandal. In the spirit of revolution or romantic musings, scandals provoke an imagining of the impossible. Utopian or mundane, how might scandal reveal what lies unwittingly close to our fantasies? And how does it expose where society places its limits? If life is a scandal waiting to be plotted, how do we position ourselves within its matrix? Immoral and lacking propriety, scandals are incidents where fantasy and pleasure take centre stage. Guided by the questions for whom this pleasure is for and at what expense, Ligia Lewis’s new plot explores the stage where scandals abound. Weaving together historical, anecdotal, political, and mythical narratives, Lewis constructs the poetics of refusal at the edges of representation. A dance between affect and embodiment, seeing and being seen, A Plot / A Scandal is a scene in the making where the excitement for that which does not fit might find its place.

Ligia Lewis works as a choreographer and dancer. Lewis’s works, often marked by expressions of physical intensity and humour, seek to animate subjects through physical forms of expression that disrupt normative conceptions of the body while negotiating the ghostly traces of history, memory, and the unknown. Through choreography, she develops expressive concepts that give form to movements, speech, affects, thoughts, relations, utterances, and the bodies that hold them.
