Im Spannungsfeld zwischen Schönheit und Gefahr muss die Existenz in Islands von Grund auf neu aufgebaut, das Leben neu erlernt werden. Elementare Logiken sind neu zu verhandeln, neuartige Formen von Intelligenz sind im Entstehen. Das Leben oszilliert zwischen mineralischen, pflanzlichen, tierischen, menschlichen und maschinellen Formen. Islands entwirft eine alternative Form von Organisation – einen von der natürlichen Welt abgegrenzten Ausnahmezustand. Hier wird die Replikation zum Überlebensmodus und Tanz zur Waffe.

In dem archaisch-futuristischen Diptychon On Earth I’m Done, das Jefta van Dinther als „Associated Choreographer“ für die renommierte schwedische Tanzkompanie Cullberg kreiert hat, wird das Publikum an einen Ort herausgerissen aus dem konventionellen Raum-Zeit-Kontinuum versetzt. Der erste Teil, das Solo Mountains, stellt Kultur und Natur gegenüber und war im Januar 2022 im TQW zu sehen. Der zweite Teil, Islands, ein Gruppenstück für 13 Tänzer*innen, widmet sich dem Dualismus Kultur und Technologie.

Jefta van Dinther ist Tänzer und Choreograf. Er wuchs in Schweden auf, hat an der Amsterdam School of the Arts studiert und lebt heute in Berlin. Die Interaktion von Körpern, Licht und Klang, die oft eine synästhetische und von Clubkultur geprägte Symbiose eingehen, ist ein zentrales Element seines Schaffens. Dunkelheit, Illusion, (Un-)Sichtbarkeit und das Spiel mit der eigenen Wahrnehmung tauchen oft in seinen Arbeiten auf, die von installativen Settings, kleineren, intimen Performances bis hin zu großformatigen Produktionen reichen. Jefta van Dinther hat bisher zwei Ensemblearbeiten mit Cullberg umgesetzt: Plateau Effect und Protagonist. Neben international erfolgreichen Bühnenarbeiten wie The Quiet und Dark Field Analysis choreografierte er zudem das Musikvideo Monument von Röyksopp & Robyn, in dem er auch selbst tanzt. Von 2019 bis 2022 war er gemeinsam mit Alma Söderberg and Deborah Hay „Associated Artist“ bei Cullberg.

Cullberg, 1967 von Birgit Cullberg gegründet, ist das führende Repertoireensemble für zeitgenössischen Tanz in Schweden. Durch die Zusammenarbeit mit Choreograf*innen und Regisseur*innen, die im zeitgenössischen Bereich verwurzelt sind, trägt Cullberg maßgeblich zur Entwicklung der darstellenden Kunst und des Tanzes als Kunstform bei. In Islands, the audience is transported to a place torn out of the conventional space-time continuum. Orbiting the conflicts of beauty and danger, existence must be rebuilt from scratch and living learnt anew. Elementary logics and irregular intelligences are being reborn; life passes between mineral, vegetal, animal, human and machinic forms. Islands is a performance which imagines an alternate order of organisation, a state of exception, quarantined from the natural world. Here, replication becomes a mode of survival and dancing a weapon.

Jefta van Dinther returned as an associated choreographer to Cullberg in 2019 and has since created two new works for the company. Jefta van Dinther is a choreographer and dancer based in Berlin. He grew up in Sweden, after which he moved to the Netherlands and graduated from the Amsterdam School of the Arts. Van Dinther’s works deal with notions of illusion, the visible and the invisible, synaesthesia, darkness, labour, the uncanny, affect, voice and image. They often play with presentation formats ranging from traditional dispositifs to installation-like settings and from smaller intimate performances to large-scale productions. Jefta van Dinther has realised two ensemble works with Cullberg: Plateau Effect and Protagonist.
