2024, Kunstakademie Wien: Die Performanceklasse hat die Nase voll vom sexbesessenen Partymonster GASH. GASH setzt falsche Prioritäten, und nach 25 Jahren in der Klasse soll sie nun rausgeschmissen werden. DIE PERFORMANCE PROFESSORIN verpflichtet GASH, als Strafe die Professur in der Malereiklasse zu übernehmen. Von der freien Stelle erfahren hat diese von der 95-jährigen FRAU SCHÖNE, Vermieterin der Maler*innen und eine alte Freundin aus der Wiener Disco-Szene der 1980er. Seit der Entlassung ihres alten Malereiprofessors sind die Studierenden völlig durcheinander und deprimiert. Ihre Bilder sind ausdruckslos und fad geworden. FRAU SCHÖNE konnte sie mit strenger Kontrolle im Zaum halten und droht ihnen mit dem Rauswurf aus dem Atelier, wenn ihre Arbeiten nicht gut genug sind, um sie verkaufen zu können. Doch wie werden die Maler*innen mit einer Performancekünstlerin als Professorin zurechtkommen …?
Charlotte Gash inszeniert die Existenzkrisen junger Künstler*innen als DIY-Musical. Mit Jazz Hands, schlechtem Schauspiel, kitschigen Songs und viel Humor erzählt The Sound of Losers eine Geschichte über Erwartungen, Abhängigkeiten, Privilegien und Scheitern.

Charlotte Gash verknüpft Kritik am Alltäglichen mit ihren Erfahrungen in der Kunstwelt und erschafft dabei Narrative und Gegennarrative, in denen das Arbeitsleben zeitgenössischer Künstler*innen aus feministischer Perspektive zur Diskussion gestellt wird. Sie arbeitet mit Humor und Satire (und Pappe) in den Medien Video, Skulptur, Text und Performance, wobei das Schreiben von Drehbüchern eine zentrale Rolle spielt. In der Umsetzung dieser Szenarien imitiert sie Formate aus der Populärkultur und deren Stilistik, seien es Fernsehserien, Mockumentarys oder Theaterstücke. Dabei arbeitet sie oft mit einer autofiktionalen Figur und deren wiederkehrenden Sidekicks. Charlotte Gash, geboren 1994 in Großbritannien, lebt in Wien. Sie studierte Bildhauerei am Wimbledon College of Arts in London sowie Performative Kunst an der Akademie der bildenden Künste in Wien.

Set in the present-day within the art academy in Vienna, the performance class is sick and tired of sex-obsessed party maniac GASH. GASH’s priorities are not in order, and after 25 years in the class, they’re ready to kick her out. As punishment, THE PROFESSOR OF THE PERFORMANCE CLASS sends GASH over to the painting class to take over the professorship after hearing about the vacant position from the painters’ landlord, 95-year-old FRAU SCHÖNE (an old friend from the 80s disco scene in Vienna). Since the painters’ professor was fired, the students are depressed and dishevelled. Their paintings have grown bland and dull. FRAU SCHÖNE has kept them disciplined with severe control and threatens to evict them from the studio if they don't create good enough work that she can sell. But how will the painters get along with a performance artist as a professor...?

Charlotte Gash combines a critique of the everyday with her own experiences of the art world, creating narratives and counter-narratives that open up discussions around working as a contemporary artist with a feminist perspective. Always using humour and satire (and cardboard), her works take the form of video, sculpture, text and performance, with script writing as a key ingredient. She translates these scenarios through the imitation of popular culture, whether it be through the style of a TV show, mockumentary or a play, often featuring a recurring auto-fictional character and her sidekicks. Charlotte Gash (b. 1994 in the UK) studied Sculpture at Wimbledon College of Arts, London and Performative Kunst at Akademie der bildenden Künste, Vienna. She lives and works in Vienna. Recently, she presented her works in the group exhibitions Über das Neue at Belvedere 21, Unfreezing the Scene. Prize of the Kunsthalle Wien and in the solo exhibition GASH STATION at Neuer Kunstverein Wien.
